Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
In this unit of work children learn about the life and work of the famous painter Vincent Van Gogh. Studying some of his most iconic paintings provides opportunities for children to develop their skills and techniques in colour mixing, painting and drawing whilst learning about Van Gogh’s distinctive painting style. Children consolidate their understanding of different painting genre by creating a landscape painting, portrait painting, still-life painting and genre (everyday) painting in the style of Van Gogh. Children learn about the Van Gogh Immersive Experience and apply their knowledge and understanding of the artist and his painting style to create a model room for an art installation.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: The Paintings of Vincent Van Gogh: Sunflowers
Session 2: The Paintings of Vincent Van Gogh: Starry Nights
Session 3: The Paintings of Vincent Van Gogh: Self Portraits
Session 4: The Paintings of Vincent Van Gogh: Arles
Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Van Gogh, The Immersive Experience
The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. The creative outcome is based on the Van Gogh Immersive Experience which has become a recent attraction to showcase the work of the artist. This provides an opportunity for children to learn about art installations and how art evolves over time and can be interpreted in different ways. Children create a model of a room for a Van Gogh experience and decorate the room in the style of the artist. They add images of iconic paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and curate a small magazine (a zine) about the artist and his work. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
In this session children learn about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and some of his iconic paintings that are famous across the globe. In this session children’s learning is focused on his sunflower series of paintings and developing different brushstroke techniques that children apply when creating a sunflower painting in the style of the artist.
Session 2
In this session children learn about two iconic paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, both which feature starry nights. These present an opportunity to consolidate children’s knowledge about the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh and build upon children’s understanding of the techniques that he used.
Session 3
In this session children learn about Vincent Van Gogh self-portraits. This is an opportunity to consolidate children’s understanding of portraiture including facial proportions and different viewpoints. Children learn about the technique of feathering that can be used to replicate the brushstroke style of the artist.
Session 4
Overview: In this session children learn about two iconic paintings created by the artist whilst staying in the town of Arles. This is an opportunity to build upon previous learning and to consolidate children’s understanding of the use of linear perspective and colour theory when creating a painted composition.
Creative Outcome
The creative outcome is based on the Van Gogh Immersive Experience which has become a recent attraction to showcase the work of the artist. This provides an opportunity for children to learn about art installations and how art evolves over time and can be interpreted in different ways. Children create a model of a room for a Van Gogh experience and decorate the room in the style of the artist. They add images of iconic paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and curate a small magazine (a zine) about the artist and his work.
