Unit Overview

Sequence of Learning for Teachers

In this unit of work children learn about the ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. Through focusing on this iconic artist from the twentieth century children develop and consolidate their knowledge and skills in drawing, painting and sculpture.

This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following four convergent task sessions:

  • Session 1: Introducing Clarice Cliff

  • Session 2: Oranges and Lemons

  • Session 3: Clarice Cliff Landscapes

  • Session 4: Clarice Cliff Relief Sculpture

Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Clarice Cliff Relief Tile

The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome, children apply their knowledge and understanding about the creative style of the artist with the techniques of ceramic sculpture to create a clay bas relief tile in the style of Clarice Cliff.

The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.

Learning Sequence

Session 1

In this session children are introduced to the life and work of the ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. Having learnt about some of her iconic designs, they will undertake a series of observational drawing activities based on drawing sliced fruits (oranges and lemons). This is an opportunity to develop their skills in adding colour and detail using watercolour paints and colouring pencils.

Session 2

This session builds upon children’s learning from session 1. They use their observational drawings to create stylised versions of oranges and lemons in their sketchbooks. They use these versions as a guide when decorating a paper plate in the style of Clarice Cliff and her Bizarre range of pottery.

Session 3

This session extends children’s knowledge of the different decorative designs used by Clarice Cliff to decorate her range of pottery items by focusing on her landscape designs. They consolidate their understanding of a stylised design by creating a landscape painting in the style of the artist and mimicking her pottery designs.

Session 4

In this session children have the opportunity to develop their skills and techniques when creating a ceramic relief sculpture. Using sketchbook images from sessions 1 & 2 as a guide they create a small ceramic relief sculpture of either an orange or lemon slice. This is an opportunity for children to develop their skills and techniques in using clay as a malleable material to create a sculpture and using the score and slip method to join pieces of clay together.

Creative Outcome

For the creative outcome children apply their knowledge and understanding about the creative style of the artist Clarice Cliff with the techniques of ceramic sculpture to create a clay bas relief tile in the style of the artist. They create a simple clay tile which they then decorate by etching out patterned decorations and using the score and slip method to create the relief design using small pieces of shaped clay.
