Progression & Assessment in Art and Design

The primary curriculum is a ‘mastery curriculum’. This is based on the principle that all learners should, with effective teaching and learning opportunities, meet the expected standard by the end of key stage 2. Learners who obtain a greater level of understanding and are able to apply their learning across a range of different contexts have achieved mastery.

Knowledge, technique, and skills take time to experience and master. In order to develop fluency, deepen their understanding and apply techniques, children are given opportunities to revisit and build upon previous learning experiences, skills and techniques.

  • Revisiting and recalling learning experiences improves the chances of children committing their learning to long-term memory.

  • Practising and refining techniques builds muscle-memory and leads to automaticity.

The Art Academy Curriculum Pathway is the progression map that details the knowledge, skills and techniques that children should know and remember at each stage of their learning journey to wards the end of key stage 2. An effective and detailed progression map can form the basis for assessing children's progress in art and design and can indicate whether children are 'keeping up with the curriculum' and are on track to reach the end of key stage expectations in the subject. Each unit of work includes five statements that act as indicators that children are keeping up with the curriculum.
