Unit Overview

Sequence of Learning for Teachers

In this unit of work children are introduced to key techniques that are used to create art. Through practical activities involving drawing, painting, printmaking, weaving and sculpture children begin their learning journey in creating art developing their creativity as well as teaching them the techniques and skills that allow them to be creative. This creativity and technical knowledge are developed through a common theme of under the sea.

This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:

Session 1: Fishy Painting

Session 2: Fishing Printmaking

Session 3: Fishy Weaving

Session 4: Fishy Sculpture

Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Fishy Diorama

The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome children create an undersea diorama by bringing together their learning from this unit of work and developing sculpture skills and techniques. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions as well as developing their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination and ideas with knowledge and skills in art and design. The convergent tasks also provide an opportunity for the teacher to identify children who may need further support in developing skills and techniques during the divergent creative outcome task.

Learning Sequence

Session 1

In this session children develop their drawing skills through learning how to draw an outline and to create patterns using line and shape. They apply their knowledge to create wax resist paintings of patterned fish.

Session 2

In this session children are introduced to printmaking as a method for creating art. They learn that printmaking involves transferring an image from one surface to another and that printmaking techniques allow for images to be repeated. Children use printmaking techniques to create patterned fish images.

Session 3

In this session children are introduced to the technique of weaving that can be used to create art. As an introduction, children learn a weaving technique using paper to create patterns that can be used to create weaves in the shape of fish.

Session 4

This session consists of two activities that introduce different sculpture techniques that can be used to create art. Children learn that sculpture is three-dimensional art and learn the techniques of modelling and assemblage that can be used to create fishy sculptures.

Creative Outcome

For the creative outcome children work in small groups to create a diorama scene of ‘Under the Sea’. This is an opportunity for children to apply the knowledge, skills and techniques learnt in this unit of work and to use their creativity to create the diorama. This is also an opportunity to introduce how artists can collaborate to share ideas and create art. The diorama can be created in a range of three-dimensional objects such as a shoe box, egg carton or, as illustrated on the learning slides, a plastic bottle or cereal box.
