Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
In this unit of work children create art using paper and scissors. They learn about how cutting, shaping and collage techniques can be used to create patterns and images. As part of the learning in this unit of work, they study the life and work of Henri Matisse and Keith Haring.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: Colour Families
Session 2: Silhouette Art
Session 3: Notan Art
Session 4: Abstract Collage
Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Action Figure Collage
The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome children draw inspiration from two artists born nearly a hundred years apart. Children combine the paper cut-out techniques of Henri Matisse with the street art of the American graffiti artist Keith Haring to create an action figure collage. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
Colour Families
Overview: In this session children consolidate their knowledge of colour and colour mixing by creating painted pattern papers of colour families. This session also deepens their knowledge of the techniques of using watercolour paints to create different patterns and effects. The patterned paper will be used in creative activities in future sessions in this unit of work.

Session 2
Silhouette Art
Overview: In this session children learn about the importance of considering space when creating art and the ideas behind positive and negative space. They explore these ideas through creating silhouette art.

Session 3
Notan Art
Overview: This session builds upon children’s learning from session 2. Children learn about an additional technique, Notan Art, which explores light and dark and negative and positive space in art and design.

Session 4
Abstract Collage
Overview: In this session children are introduced to the life and work of the French artist Henri Matisse, particularly featuring his later work using paper cut-outs to create art. Using his art for inspiration children create an abstract collage.

Creative Outcome
Action Figure Collage
For the creative outcome children draw inspiration from two artists born nearly a hundred years apart. Children combine the paper cut-out techniques of Henri Matisse with the street art of the American graffiti artist Keith Haring to create an action figure collage.
