Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
In this unit of work children learn about and create a range of assemblage sculptures based on famous abstract works of art. They are introduced to the genre of abstract art and study works by famous abstract artists. Using a range of materials, skills and techniques they create sculptures based on iconic abstract art. For the creative outcome children learn about the style and artwork of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama prior to creating a sculpture based on her iconic work.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: Kandinsky Abstract
Session 2: Joan Miro Sculpture
Session 3: Piet Mondrian
Session 4: Picasso Guitar
Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Yayoi Kusama Abstract Sculpture
The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome children apply their knowledge and understanding from previous sessions to create an abstract assemblage sculpture. They decorate their abstract sculpture in the style of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
In this session children are introduced to abstract art and learn about the art of Wassily Kandinsky. They learn paper sculpture techniques and apply their knowledge of the artist’s work to create 3D paper sculptures.

Session 2
In this session children learn about the abstract art of the Spanish artist Joan Miro. They learn that sculpture is three-dimensional art and some of the techniques that are used to create sculpture. They create an assemblage sculpture by joining together card pieces using slots and tabs. This is then decorated in the distinctive abstract designs of Joan Miro

Session 3
In this unit children learn about the abstract art of Piet Mondrian. Having learnt about his iconic artwork, children create a 3D assemblage sculpture of his work. This activity provides an opportunity for children to widen their experience of creating assemblage sculpture using a range of materials.

Session 4
In this session children learn about the art of Pablo Picasso and are introduced to cubism as an art movement. They study how Picasso created a cardboard sculpture of a guitar before making their own cubist guitar sculpture.

Creative Outcome
For the creative outcome children apply their knowledge and understanding from previous sessions to create an abstract assemblage sculpture using recycled and reclaimed waste objects that have been collected over the duration of the unit of work. (Children can collaborate in groups of up to four for this activity). They decorate their abstract sculpture in the style of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
