Unit Overview

Sequence of Learning for Teachers

In this unit of work children study the Pop Art movement from the second half of the twentieth century with a focus on consumer products that feature in Pop Art. Children learn about some of the most iconic works of art from the Pop Art movement and the artists that created them. Through this unit children learn about a range of techniques that were used to create Pop Art and develop and apply the skills that were used to make them.

This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:

Session 1: Drawing Fruit

Session 2: Fruit Delights

Session 3: Lichtenstein Sculptures

Session 4: Candy Collage

Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Warhol Workshops

The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the Creative Outcome children learn about probably the most famous Pop Artist, Andy Warhol. Children consolidate their knowledge and understanding about the artist and some of his most iconic works of art. They particularly focus on his artworks that were created using multiple images. Three different workshops are provided that teach different techniques to create multiple image artwork in the style of Andy Warhol. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.

Learning Sequence

Session 1

In this session children are introduced to the Pop Art movement. They learn about its origins and the common features of the Pop Art style. They practise and develop their observational drawing skills through drawing a range of different fruit.

Session 2

In this session children learn about the life and work of the Pop Artist Andy Warhol and are introduced to some of his iconic works of art. They use their observational drawings from the previous session to develop a piece of Pop Art that based on the work of the artist.

Session 3

In this session children learn about the artwork and the distinctive style of the artist Roy Lichtenstein. As part of their learning children take part in a discussion about what is meant by an icon and what are iconic images of Britain in the 21st century. Children mimic Lichtenstein’s style when creating a simple cardboard sculpture of an iconic image from the 21st century.

Session 4

In this session children consolidate their understanding of how food products featured heavily in the Pop Art movement. Children learn about how artists, and particularly Peter Blake, used the technique of collage to create art as part of the Pop Art movement. They apply this knowledge to create a 'Candy Collage' composition.

Creative Outcome

For the Creative Outcome children return to learning about probably the most famous Pop Artist, Andy Warhol. Children consolidate their knowledge and understanding about the artist and some of his most iconic works of art. They particularly focus on his artworks that were created using multiple images. A range of different workshops are provided that teach different techniques to create multiple image artwork in the style of Andy Warhol.
