Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
In this unit of work children are introduced to portraits and self-portraits. This unit provides an opportunity for children to work with a range of materials to create portraits of both them and their friends, using techniques such as drawing, painting, collage and sculpture.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: Drawing Faces
Session 2: Painting Faces
Session 3: Paper Plate Faces
Session 4: Sculpture Faces
Creative Outcome: Portrait Statues
For the creative outcome children are introduced to the portraits of the Dutch artist Karel Appel. They learn about his distinctive child-like style of creating art and use one of his creations, Questioning Children (1949) as inspiration for developing a statue sculpture. The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions as well as developing their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination and ideas with knowledge and skills in art and design. The convergent tasks also provide an opportunity for the teacher to identify children who may need further support in developing skills and techniques during the divergent creative outcome task.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
Drawing Faces
Overview: In this session children are introduced to the genre of portraiture. They learn how line and shape are elements of art and can be used to create simple line portraits focusing on the shape of the head and the style of the hair.
Session 2
Painting Faces
Overview: This session builds upon learning in the previous session by focusing children on how line and shape are used to create facial features. They learn where these features are arranged on the face and how colour can be used in portraiture to add more detail.
Session 3
Paper Plate Faces
Overview: In this session children consolidate their knowledge of portraiture and how the elements of art combine to create portraits. They are introduced to the techniques of collage and mixed media which they apply when creating paper plate portraits.
Session 4
Sculpture Faces
Overview: In this session children learn how sculpture techniques can be used to create a three-dimensional portrait. Children work with a malleable material and use modelling techniques to create a face sculpture.
