Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
This unit of work uses the common theme of flower paintings for learning and skill development in drawing, painting and collage technique. As part of the learning activities for this unit of work children consolidate and develop their observational drawing techniques and learn about the flower paintings of the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. This unit also provides an opportunity to deepen children’s knowledge and understanding of colour, particularly when using paint and pastels applied using a range of techniques.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: Observational Drawing
Session 2: Finishing the Flower
Session 3: Flower Bouquet
Session 4: Georgia O’Keeffe
Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – Masterpiece Activity
The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For this activity children create a flower painting by applying the techniques that they have learnt as part of the convergent tasks and by choosing a particular style of painting. As part of the masterpiece activity, children create and decorate a faux frame for their flower painting.
The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions in this unit of work. Through the creative outcome children will develop their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination with the knowledge they have acquired.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
In this session children are introduced to flower painting as an area of still life painting. Children consolidate and develop their observational drawing skills when drawing cut flowers and blooms. Having completed their drawing, they add colour using watercolour paints.

Session 2
This session provides an opportunity for children to deepen their understanding of colour mixing to create different colours and tints and shades of colours when finishing a flower painting. They attempt to match the colours of the painting and use a range of brushstrokes to complete the painting composition.

Session 3
In this session children create a flower bouquet. This provides an opportunity for children to learn to apply paint without using a brush. Instead sponges and cotton buds are used to create a range of different paint effects when creating a painted background, individual flower blooms and painted leaves. Each painted element is then brought together using collage techniques to create a flower bouquet.

Session 4
In this session children learn about the artist Georgia O’Keeffe focusing particularly on her large flower paintings which represent some of her most iconic work. Children mimic the work of the artist but instead use soft chalk pastels to create their artwork. This activity provides an opportunity for children to work with pastels, blending their colours and applying their knowledge of colour theory.

Creative Outcome
For the creative outcome children are challenged to create their own authentic flower painting masterpiece to display in the class Blooming Lovely art gallery.
For this activity children are able to choose the media with which to work and develop their own unique style of painting. This is an opportunity for them to demonstrate the knowledge and techniques that they have learnt in previous sessions of this unit of work.
