Unit Overview

Sequence of Learning for Teachers

This unit of work introduces and builds upon knowledge and skills associated with weaving textiles. Children learn the simple weave and weave using different materials. They build upon this knowledge by learning additional techniques and how to embellish their weaves. For the creative outcome they apply their knowledge of weaving with their knowledge of sculpture to create an original weave sculpture.

This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:

Session 1: Weaving with Paper

Session 2: God’s Eyes

Session 3: Paper Plate Weaving

Session 4: Card Loom Weaving

The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome children apply the knowledge, skills and techniques learnt throughout the previous sessions to create a woven twig sculpture. They use a simple twig as the basis for a loom and apply their knowledge to create a set of warp threads upon which to create a weave. They embellish their twig sculpture using a range of techniques to create pattern and for effect. Their finished sculpture is displayed alongside other examples to create a piece of public art.

The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions as well as developing their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination and ideas with knowledge and skills in art and design. The convergent tasks also provide an opportunity for the teacher to identify children who may need further support in developing skills and techniques during the divergent creative outcome task.

Learning Sequence

Session 1: Paper Weaving

This session introduces/consolidates children’s understanding of the technique of weaving. A range of paper weaving activities are suggested. This session can be delivered over two or more lessons to embed the technique of weaving with paper.

Session 2: God's Eyes

In this session children learn how weaving techniques are used to create God’s Eyes. They learn that God’s Eyes are traditional Mexican spiritual objects that are believed to offer protection against evil spirits. The session introduces children to weaving with textile yarn and deepens their understanding of the ‘over and under’ technique used in the weaving process.

Session 3: Plate Weaving

In this session children further develop their weaving skills and techniques by weaving patterns on a paper plate loom. They learn how to create the loom using a paper plate and how a simple over and under weaving technique can be used to create patterns.

Session 4: Loom Weaving

In this session children use a cardboard loom to weave a piece of textile cloth. They create a card loom from cardboard and add yarn to create the warp threads. Applying their knowledge of weaving techniques they create woven textile. Children embellish their textile using beads and rya knots. They learn how to finish their weave by creating a hanging piece of textile art.

Creative Outcome
