Unit Overview
Sequence of Learning for Teachers
This unit of work provides an opportunity for children to learn about line, shape and colour in art and how they are used to create pattern. Children are introduced to some famous artists who use pattern extensively in their artwork and learn about abstract art. Children use a range of techniques to create patterned paper and abstract art. In learning about the artwork of the British artist, Clare Youngs children learn how collage techniques can be used to create artwork and in particular, different types of animal sculptures.
This knowledge, skills and understanding is delivered through the following convergent task sessions:
Session 1: Line Patterns
Session 2: Shape Patterns
Session 3: Mandala Patterns
Session 4: Paisley Patterns
Creative Outcome (Divergent task) – The Art of Clare Youngs
The unit of work completes with the creative outcome (divergent task) activity that can be delivered over two or more sessions. These sessions can also be used for children to complete activities from sessions 1-4. For the creative outcome children study the art of the contemporary British artist Clare Youngs. They learn how she uses pattern and collage to create her art particularly focusing on her animal art and her use of patterned paper. Children create animal cardboard sculptures based on the work of the artist. The creative outcome activity provides an opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding from previous sessions as well as developing their creativity and understanding of the creative process by combining their imagination and ideas with knowledge and skills in art and design. The convergent tasks also provide an opportunity for the teacher to identify children who may need further support in developing skills and techniques during the divergent creative outcome task.
Learning Sequence
Session 1
Line Patterns
Overview: In this introductory session children are introduced to pattern and how it is used in art. Focusing on line, children experiment with mark making and creating different types of line before making patterned paper using lines. Children learn about how the artist Gustav Klimt used pattern in his artwork.
Session 2
Shape Patterns
Overview: This session builds upon learning in the previous session about pattern. Children learn how patterns can be created using shapes. Children use watercolour paints and the Dip and Dab method for using watercolours to create an abstract shape painting.
Session 3
Mandala Patterns
Overview: This session builds upon children’s knowledge and understanding of pattern and painting techniques using watercolour paints. Children learn more about the art of Wassily Kandinsky and are introduced to the abstract art of Piet Mondrian. Children learn about Mandala patterns and create a pattern using wax resist technique.
Session 4
Paisley Patterns
Overview: This session brings together children’s learning from previous sessions on creating pattern using line, shape and colour. Children apply this knowledge and a range of decorative techniques to create a paisley pattern.
Creative Outcome
Creative Outcome: The Art of Clare Youngs
